Known above all as
Saint Antonio's city, Padova is actually one of the greatest art cities in Italy, with a large and well preserved historic centre, surrounded by ancient walls and gateways.
It is full of picturesque and lively squares and characteristic arcades under which you can take pleasant walks even on rainy days.
Not to miss: the
Scrovegni Chapel with its wonderful Giotto frescoes, the
Saint Antonio Basilica, old
University, the
Palazzo della Ragione, the
Botanical Garden, the
Town Museum.
Padova also has a number of less renowned civic and religious buildings which are nonetheless well worth visiting.
On the outskirts of the city
are the
colli Euganei Park and the famous
Abano e Montegrotto spa centres,
served by a number of buses. The
Ville Venete on the Brenta Riviera
can be reached by ferry.
Padova is also a good base for visiting the cities of Venice, Verona, Vicenza, Treviso and Ferrara.
